Tara's Baby Blankets

Tara asked me to make her a couple of baby blankets edged with her wedding gown. I was so excited to give this a try. We found some really cute fabric on Etsy.com, I bought backing from my regular fabric store and when the dress arrived I was ready to begin.

For both blankets I had to lay out the bottom piece, the batting, and then the top piece.

Then I trimmed around the edges so that all three pieces were the same size.

After pin-basting I quilted them and started the dress edging.

Heidi's Quilt

A new crazy baby clothes quilt is underway, but this one's a little different. Heidi asked me to incorporate her wedding dress in with her daughter's baby clothes. What an idea, huh?

And here are about six squares laid out together on the bed. The ducks just kill me every time. So incredibly cute...especially with an umbrella.

Here the squares are trimmed and sewed together.

A "needle" is an arm's length of thread, threaded through a needle, folded in half and knotted. It yields about 7" of stitching. I went through 208 needles this weekend and had to tape my index finger from all the damage. It was totally worth it.

Spencer's Quilt

It's rare that I post pictures of my clients (if you don't count Tarrah and Susie...), but Spencer is just too cute, that I had to.

So, I'm making him a quilt. I found the fabric on etsy.com and I've been cutting for weeks. I got sick after Thanksgiving and I took a break but I finally finished today!

Since each side will be a "front" (that is, there won't be a front and a back because I have enough fabric to do a beautiful "face" on both sides) here's one side laid out.

Crazy Baby Pillow

I used scraps from the crazy baby quilt (made out of niece Tarrah's baby clothes) to do a pillow. It started out as a "let's see if this is even possible" project and very quickly became a "I will finish if it kills me" project. Luckily, it didn't kill me, which is good because Tarrah's got a birthday coming up!

First I had to cut up a LOAD of baby clothes.

Once all the fabric was cut up, I had to sort the pieces into piles by large, medium, small and teeny-tiny.

Here's where the pictures start getting good - I finally got my digital camera to work so we're no longer relying on the BlackBerry.

Here it is on the couch, completely done except for the binding, which really gave me a hard time:

I totally forgot to make the back bigger than the front so that I could just roll it over like with the necktie quilt and Nathan's quilt. Instead, I cut up another receiving blanket and made the binding out of that. This is a very common way to do binding but I'd never done it before. Luckily, I could sort of see in my head what it was supposed to look like, and I had a good ruler, so I just went for it. You can see the finished binding on the right edge:

Instead of traditional quilting in the ditch, I sewed the corners to the batting inside and then added buttons to hide the knots and add a bit of detail:

Twins!

Just as I finish up Nathan's quilt I got an order for two crib quilts for a pair of twins who will be born in October.

Here's the fabric we're using for the Boy Twin:

And here's the fabric we're using for the Girl Twin:

I'm probably going to pair Hello Kitty with some soft white flannel, or perhaps some pink and white gingham. It depends on what the fabric store has, but either way I think these are going to be so cute.

After much washing, drying, ironing, and cutting, here are the two quilts laid out on the bed 8.2.8

Boy twin is Jackson Arthur and Girl twin is Giada Marie. Quilts are signed, sealed, delivered and snuggly.

Nathan's Quilt

I had to supplement the fabric with some Gerber receiving blankets but they match beautifully and I think I'll have enough left over for a border.

Here it is, all sewn together and laid out on the bed. My little green pieces of tape are still on as this is just the beginning of the pinning process (pinning the face (top piece) to the back, and nice soft piece of blue flannel).

You can see the batting here hanging down the side. They didn't have a single bed sized piece of batting so I had to get the double bed size and cut it down:

The quilting is finished, now I just need to do the binding. I can't believe this project is almost done!
