Crazy Baby Pillow

I used scraps from the crazy baby quilt (made out of niece Tarrah's baby clothes) to do a pillow. It started out as a "let's see if this is even possible" project and very quickly became a "I will finish if it kills me" project. Luckily, it didn't kill me, which is good because Tarrah's got a birthday coming up!

Crazy Baby Quilt

First I had to cut up a LOAD of baby clothes.

Once all the fabric was cut up, I had to sort the pieces into piles by large, medium, small and teeny-tiny.

Here's the first square pieced together, and...

Here it is finished.

Close up.

And here's the second square pieced.

Second square done

Second square detail.

More second square detail.

Here are four squares in a row, two by two:

As you can see, they're very wonky as I hadn't started cutting them down yet.

Here are eight squares laid out on the bed, four at a time:

Last piece pinned to the last square

Squares sewn completely together.

Here's where the pictures start getting good - I finally got my digital camera to work so we're no longer relying on the BlackBerry.

Here it is on the couch, completely done except for the binding, which really gave me a hard time:

I totally forgot to make the back bigger than the front so that I could just roll it over like with the necktie quilt and Nathan's quilt. Instead, I cut up another receiving blanket and made the binding out of that. This is a very common way to do binding but I'd never done it before. Luckily, I could sort of see in my head what it was supposed to look like, and I had a good ruler, so I just went for it. You can see the finished binding on the right edge:

Here's the back, which I did out of receiving blankets (and there's the binding on the left)

Instead of traditional quilting in the ditch, I sewed the corners to the batting inside and then added buttons to hide the knots and add a bit of detail:

Here's the full back:

Full front:

Completely done:

Twins!

Just as I finish up Nathan's quilt I got an order for two crib quilts for a pair of twins who will be born in October.

Here's the fabric we're using for the Boy Twin:

And here's the fabric we're using for the Girl Twin:

I'm probably going to pair Hello Kitty with some soft white flannel, or perhaps some pink and white gingham. It depends on what the fabric store has, but either way I think these are going to be so cute.

After much washing, drying, ironing, and cutting, here are the two quilts laid out on the bed 8.2.8

Ready to be pinned:

The squares are turning into strips:

Finished sewing the strips last night and then was able to start sewing the strips together:

Half way there:

The face of the Girl Twin quilt is done!
Here is is on it's side:

And here it is lengthwise:

And I even had time to get almost half way done on the Boy Twin face:

Boy Twin face is finished:

Now we just need their names, and I can add the embroidery and backs!

Boy twin is Jackson Arthur and Girl twin is Giada Marie. Quilts are signed, sealed, delivered and snuggly.

Eembroidery. In the center you can see her name and date of birth and in the upper right corner you can see another white square the reads: "love, light, joy happiness".

All quilts by kate are one-of-a-kind originals. A quilt like one of these would be priced at $140.00, including the embroidery of the name of the baby.

Finished Fall 2008.

Nathan's Quilt

Here's the fabric I'm going to use, courtesy Sweet Baboo Designs:

And here's the preliminary design. I didn't finish drawing the squares, but I think you get the idea:

Second, much better design:

8th, FINAL, design:

The pattern:
First square:

60 squares:
I had to supplement the fabric with some Gerber receiving blankets but they match beautifully and I think I'll have enough left over for a border.

The quilt laid out on the bed, no border:

Laid out on the bed, close up:

Six strips, sewed and folded:

11 strips, sewed and ready to be sewn together 6.14.8:

Four strips are sewed together here with the fifth one pinned and ready to go! 6.19.8

All squares sewn together, just need to hit the fabric store to find backing (and maybe batting), sew it on and start the quilting process 6.25.8:

Here it is, all sewn together and laid out on the bed. My little green pieces of tape are still on as this is just the beginning of the pinning process (pinning the face (top piece) to the back, and nice soft piece of blue flannel).

You can see the batting here hanging down the side. They didn't have a single bed sized piece of batting so I had to get the double bed size and cut it down:

The quilting is finished, now I just need to do the binding. I can't believe this project is almost done!

The binding is almost done!

And here it is, completely finished! (7.20.8)

Final dimensions: 65" wide x 70" long.
